Thursday 31 August, 2023 (Week 7)
A note from Mrs Muir
Dear St Brigid's families,
We've had a another busy and fabulous week here at St B's! The end of last week finished on a high with both the Open Afternoon & Art Exhibition and Bookweek Parade on Friday morning.
Open Afternoon & Art Exhibition
Thank you to our teachers for presenting the classrooms and children's work so beautifully. It was wonderful to see so many parents visit their child's class to view the individual work of their children along with collaborative class works. As always, Mrs Fiona Willis curated a sensational exhibition of the children's art work. The wonderful art that is created is an absolute credit to Mrs Willis and the students, well done everyone! The other highlight of the afternoon was the Silent Auction, with just over $1,500 being raised - all this money will go directly towards larger art items benefiting all the students.
TREE Talks
Last week we held the first stage of the TREE Talks for Years 4-6 students. The 6 finalists from each year group presented their talks in front of all the Year 4 -6 classes, congratulations to:
- Year 4: Elleanor Caldwell & Ted Mentlein
- Year 5: Daisy Glancy & Ryda Perkins-Bullock
- Year 6: Ruby Dinnis & Sam Reape
These students will be attending the regional TREE Talk finals at St Mary's Boyup Brook next week with Mrs Muir. They will be competing with other visiting schools including St Joseph's Pemberton and Kearnan College Manjimup.
Father's Day Breakfast
Tomorrow morning is our annual Father's Day breaky where we cook up a storm for our Dads! From 7.45am on the basketball court we will welcome our Dads and students to enjoy a bacon & egg breakfast. We will have the "Early Birdie" coffee van on site, coffees can be purchased cash or EFTPOS. Our P&F will also be holding a raffle with tickets available for purchase tomorrow morning. Please see further in the newsletter for details.
Wellness Week
Next week we look forward to our Wellness Week, a week where we aim to 'slow the pace' and direct our focus to promoting wellbeing, mindfulness, humour, and friendships through an array of fantastic activities. Students are to wear sport uniform all week! Please see a flyer in the newsletter outlining the daily focus and fun activities throughout the week.
Have a great weekend everyone!

Year 5 Excursion
In Technologies, the Year 5 class are starting a unit on construction and materials with a focus on fibre production. Today we visited Hemp Squared and we were all amazed by the way a plant can be used to build homes. We participated in three workshop activities.
The first workshop explored the production of the hemp hurd (the woody part of the stem) and how this is dried, milled and mixed with lime and water to form hemp-crete. We learned about the environmental impacts of hemp blocks as a building material in terms of production, sustainability, insulation and fire resistance.
In the second workshop we were able to build our own hemp bricks using a wooden form, this was so much fun! The students were excited by how quickly the materials came together and how easy it was to shape the bricks.
In the third workshop, the students mixed the hemp-crete with different oxide pigments and placed them in a large, shared form.
This will cure and be returned to our class as a collaborative artwork for us to enjoy. Thanks so much to Bec, Iggy & Mark at Hemp Squared, this was such a fabulous and interactive experience and a fun way to learn about construction materials!

Saint Brigid's Feast Day Celebrations
Next Monday 4 September, we will be holding Feast Day Celebrations for our Patron Saint Brigid. Traditionally Saint Brigid's Day lands on 1 February each year, this marks the first day of Spring on the Gaelic calendar. We celebrate St Brigid's Day at the beginning of our Spring season. Feast Day celebrations will commence with a liturgy at 9am in the church, followed by a selection of activities throughout the morning. These include a history tour of the Convent, a Kahoot quiz on Saint Brigid, Crucifix making of Brigid's Cross woven from hay - traditionally to ward off evil, games and relays and many other activities to celebrate our feast day.
Children are asked to wear their faction t-shirt on Monday.
Wellness Week
Wellness Week is next week, Monday 4 to Friday 8 September. Children can wear sport uniform all week. Faction shirts on Monday and Friday.
See below for what we have planned!
Mason & Emma West
Many of you will remember Mason (Year 6 graduate 2022) and Emma West (Year 3, 2022) from their years at St Brigid's School. At the beginning of 2023 the West family moved to Perth, following Mason being accepted into a baketball scholarship program at Willeton Senior High School. Mason has continued to go from strength to strength with his basketball pursuits and last week he represented WA in the U12 boys State baketball team! This national tournament was hosted in Perth and they competed against teams from the other states and territories. The WA boys team took home the silver medal! Wow, what an awesome achievement, well done Mason!
Meanwhile Emma is fast become a Cheer Leading superstar and recently took part in her first Cheer Leading Showcase!
